Salute To Master Gardeners

Gov. Christine Gregoire has proclaimed the week of May 11-17 as WSU Master Gardener Volunteer Week. We mention this because our own Jeff Leonard, Pacific Science Center Horticultural Supervisor, has been a Certified Master Gardener since 1992 and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Master Gardener Foundation of Washington State. You will find Jeff tending to all the trees and plants on our grounds as well as the wide array of vegetation in our Tropical Butterfly House. Jeff and all Master Gardeners are often referred to as "Citizen Scientists" and are 'first detectors,' diagnosing potential pests and problems; and they offer aid and advice to the public on home gardening, household pests, and many other issues. So, thanks Jeff and all Master Gardeners for your great work! →Learn More

The Cost of Scientific Illiteracy

SEATTLE--Our society is behind the eight ball when it comes science literacy. That's no surprise. But are our efforts to improve actually making things worse? Author and science policy journalist Chris Mooney will join local experts, including our own Dennis Schatz, UW Dean of the Evans School of Public Affairs Sandra Archibald, WSU researcher Steve Jones and others at Pacific Science Center on Thursday, May 14 at 7 p.m.

Actively addressing issues of science and society through rich dialogue and debate is one of Pacific Science Center's strategic initiatives and we look forward to what should be a very provocative evening. The event will be held at Pacific Science Center's Eames Theater. For more information, check out website pacificsciencecenter.org.

Here are the details:

Dumb, Getting Dumber? The Cost of Scientific Illiteracy;
Author Chris Mooney
May 14 - 7:00 p.m.
Pacific Science Center's Eames Theater

Presented by the Northwest Science Writers Association (http://www.nwscience.org/) and Pacific Science Center, this promises to be a lively discussion about science illiteracy in the United States. Mooney is the author of several books including his latest entitled "Unscientific America: How scientific illiteracy threatens our future" In the book, Mooney discusses how corporate interests, a weak education system, science-phobic politicians, and hyper specialized scientists have created the dangerous state of affairs we now find ourselves in. During the forum Chris will discuss a broad array of initiatives that could reverse the current trend and lead to the greater integration of science into our school system--before it is too late. Mercer Slough Ed Center Receives Coveted Green Globe Award from King County!

BELLEVUE – Amidst the lush, green landscape and marshy backdrop it's not a surprise that the Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center has snatched up another award. This time it's the coveted Green Globe Award from King County.

The Environmental Education Center, at 1625-118th Ave. SE, is a gateway to the 320-acre Mercer Slough Nature Park, a wetland in the heart of urban Bellevue. Home to hundreds of diverse plants and animals that depend on the wetlands ecosystem for survival, the slough is ideal for environmental study.

The Mercer Slough was one of 10 Green Globe Award recipients recognizing individuals, school districts, cities and businesses that all have one thing in common: an unwavering commitment to improving the world we live in.

In honor of Earth Day, this year's awards were presented by King County Councilmembers Kathy Lambert, Jane Hague, and Dow Constantine, who provided a keynote speech.

The Mercer Slough was recognized as a leader in sustainable building. A partnership of the City of Bellevue and Pacific Science Center, the new Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center provides unique opportunities for hands-on environmental education in the 320-acre Mercer Slough Nature Park. Completed in October 2008, the complex features classrooms, a visitor center, a community building and a "tree house," all sustainably built utilizing the LEED certification system.

Pacific Science Center and the City of Bellevue have offered classes at Mercer Slough for the past 15 years. However, the original education center was the Sullivan House, a retrofitted Parks property that could only accommodate 8,000 students each year. Once all phases of the new expansion are complete, the center will be able to welcome as many as 40,000 school children, teachers and families each year.

The new education center includes the Sullivan House (remodeled), a new classroom, wet lab, community building and a visitor center. A planned second phase of expansion will add an additional classroom and wet lab (details at http://www.bellevuewa.gov/mseec.htm).

"The new Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center provides unique opportunities for hands-on environmental education,” said Jan Hague, King County Councilmember, District 6, in a letter congratulating Pacific Science Center President and CEO, Bryce Seidl about the award. "The Pacific Science Center has always been committed to improving the environment and advancing technology.”

With its special features, including slough overlooks, the wet lab and a tree house, the new facility will give visitors a hands-on wetlands experience. A network of boardwalks enables visitors to see the slough without disturbing it.

The partnership project serves all ages. Pacific Science Center provides science-based education programs targeted to youth and families to inspire lifelong awareness, understanding and
appreciation for stewardship of the natural world. With the same focus, the city provides environmental interpretive programs for adults and families. The city will also maintain the property.

The center, designed by Jones & Jones, Architects and Landscape Architects, has already earned a King County "Excellence in Building Green Award.” Environmentally friendly construction materials and methods were used throughout the project. The "green” building elements include roofs that collect rainwater into a gentle runoff to nurture native plants, and it's not just the buildings themselves that are "green.”

Even the processes used to construct the buildings were also in tune with the city's Environmental Stewardship Initiative and the environmental mission of Pacific Science Center. The drills used for construction were environmentally friendly, running on corn oil to eliminate the threat of toxic seepage.

"We are thrilled to be able to expand our space and naturalist-led programs to so that more school groups and individuals can experience and learn about all that this wetland and its contiguous watershed have to offer,” said Bryce Seidl, president and CEO for Pacific Science Center.

All Things 'Trek' This Weekend

When one of THE biggest sci-fi films of the year comes to Pacific Science Center, we tend to go all out for it. When this particular film touches one of our staff's favorite topics...well, we pull out all the stops. When Star Trek: the IMAX Experience opens Thursday, May 7, many of our visitors and some of our staff will be in costume. Actually, those costumes may be seen during the 30 hours of non-stop 'Trek' all weekend long. As our visitors arrive Thursday night they'll be ushered into the theater to the sound of the Star Trek theme and the welcoming remarks will be in Klingon.

In addition to all of that, John Borcherding, better known as Laser Ivan, one of the world's top laser artists in our Laser Dome, happens to also be the world's top rated player of the game "Star Trek Legacy" which is the newest console game offered by the Star Trek franchise. That's right. Laser Ivan is the world's top rated player. The world's fourth rated player, XxXTC - Reed X happens to live near Walla Walla and both have agreed to be on hand this weekend to offer tips. Laser Ivan will be in the lower lobby of the Boeing IMAX Theater from 6-9 p.m. Thursday night, May 7 and Saturday, May 9 from 10 a.m until 9:30 p.m. Reed will join him Saturday. Hey...if you're into all things Trek, you need to be at Pacific Science Center this weekend! Be sure to →check our schedule and watch the trailer.
